How do you get schoolchildren excited about science, technology and the energy transition? That was the question on the mind of the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Science and Engineering when it launched its science truck in 2005. RWE started partnering the truck on 1 January 2024, as an important part of the OranjeWind Knowledge programme is training enough skilled workers to meet demand, now and in the future.

Where will our electricity come from in 2030? How will we heat our homes in 2040? Will there still be cars in 2050? The answers to these questions are not at all self-evident, and future energy supply is a major challenge.

That is why RUG’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, Gasunie and, as of 1 January, RWE are challenging schoolchildren to help think of useful solutions for our future energy system. The Your Energy of Tomorrow science truck serves as a central cog, travelling to primary and secondary schools to explore the future with students. Together with the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), a teaching programme has also been developed on Artificial Intelligence.

Science and energy

The Your Energy Tomorrow science truck offers various classroom programmes and practicals with themes closely related to subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, astronomy, computer science and artificial intelligence. Examples include: Build your own solar cell and compete for the highest efficiency; Build an efficient wind turbine, and Help work out scenarios for your energy tomorrow.

As a partner of the truck, RWE wants to help train enough skilled personnel to meet demand and get ready for the energy transition, one of the pillars of the OranjeWind Knowledge programme. In the context of the partnership, RWE is also sharing its expertise in energy generation to help optimise the teaching materials.
