Gas-fired power station

Swentibold power plant

Facts and figures

Power plant location Geleen, the Netherlands
Power plant type Cogeneration plant - in operation since 2024 as congestion support power plant
Commissioned in 1999
Fuel Natural gas
Output 230 MW of electricity, 300 tonnes of steam per hour

Electricity from natural gas and residual gases

Swentibold has been in operation since 1999 and was originally built as a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. Located on the Chemelot industrial estate in Geleen (Limburg), the plant is partially remotely operated and is one of RWE Generation's industrial plants. The plant generates electricity with a gas and steam turbine with a maximum capacity of 230 MW, providing grid support in the south of the Netherlands. In 2024 and 2025, Swentibold will undergo an extensive overhaul, before returning to optimal operation.

Swentibold also has the option of producing steam (140 bar/525˚C and 18 bar/300˚C) by heating demineralised water with combustion gases from the gas turbine, which are then added to the so-called off-gas boilers. This option as a cogeneration plant is not currently used.
