Moerdijk battery 2

The Project

A 400 MW/1,100 MWh battery is to be built on the site of RWE’s gas-fired power station in Moerdijk in 2026/2027. The battery storage system will be one of the largest and most powerful in the Netherlands and will be able to deliver its maximum power for at least two hours.

The battery storage system will help stabilise the electricity grid in North Brabant.

It will consist of 208 containers housing lithium-ion batteries and will be capable of storing energy for more than 500,000 households. The system is expected to be fully operational in April 2028.

The new battery system will utilise the existing grid connection.

Why This Project?

As in other parts of the Netherlands, grid congestion is becoming an increasing problem in the province of North Brabant.

This new battery system will quickly store or feed back electricity and bridge short-term shortages or peak loads, thereby relieving pressure on the electricity grid in the area. Battery systems play a crucial role in the energy system of the future.

Our Contribution

Globally, RWE currently operates battery storage systems with a total capacity of approximately 1.2 gigawatts (GW). More than 2.7 gigawatts are under construction, including a 400 MW battery system in Lingen, Germany. As an integral part of its growth strategy, RWE plans to significantly expand its battery storage capacities worldwide.

Innovation is central to our work. We achieve this by developing new technologies, either independently or in collaboration with partners. The use of advanced converters in the inertia battery in Moerdijk is an example of this.
