Eemshaven battery storage

RWE Image

The project

The Eemshaven battery project is RWE’s first large-scale battery storage project in the Netherlands with an installed capacity of 35 megawatts (MW) and a storage capacity of 41 megawatt hours (MWh). That is equivalent to powering 3000 EV chargers at once.

110 lithium-ion battery racks are being installed at the Eemshaven power plant. The storage system will provide controllable power from 2025. The system has been designed in such a way that virtually cross-technology connection to RWE's power plants in the Netherlands is possible. The system will be used to balance the energy in the power grid which will enable optimal energy management.

Why this project?

Battery storage is an effective way of integrating fluctuating electricity production from wind and solar power from projects such as the OranjeWind offshore wind farm under development into the Dutch energy system. Because not all of the electricity produced when the wind blows is always needed. Balancing the peaks and troughs in electricity generation in this way over time will allow more renewable energy to be integrated into the grid.

Our contribution

RWE's first large-scale battery storage project in the Netherlands is a major step towards a reliable electricity supply in an increasingly green national energy system. Through this, RWE is actively helping to further stabilise the Dutch electricity grid.

Construction of the battery at the RWE Eemshaven power plant site started in February 2024.

Part of OranjeWind

In 2022, RWE was awarded the permit for the realisation of the 'OranjeWind' offshore project off the Dutch coast. The battery project is part of the system integration that characterises OranjeWind which will combine wind energy with the generation of green hydrogen and other innovative solutions.
